Wi-Fi distribution via VPN on GL.iNet router
This instruction will demonstrate the process of sharing Wi-Fi with a pre-configured OpenVPN connection using a GL.iNet router as an example.
The advantages of such a type of connection are:
- There is no need to set up a VPN on every device connected to Wi-Fi;
- You can connect multiple devices to Wi-Fi simultaneously;
- If "KillSwitch" is enabled, the leakage of the real IP address outside the VPN is prevented;
- DNS request leak protection (configuration required);
- Minimum unnecessary wires and the ability to move freely in space;
- Ease of setup when you have a Wi-Fi supported GL.iNet router;;
- Something I forgot to write about;
In this instruction, it is assumed that you have already:
1. You have it available and connected the GL.iNet mini-router
2. You have set up the OpenVPN connection according to the instructions
First, you need to open the router's admin panel and log in with the administrator password.
If your GL.iNet router supports Wi-Fi functionality, you will find a corresponding section in the main menu on the left. Click on the "WIRELESS" section and press the "Modify" button.
The settings editing function is unlocked. What is recommended to change:
1. Wi-Fi Name (SSID) - It's better to change it to something simple that doesn't explicitly reference the device name.
2. Wi-Fi Key - is the password that will be required when connecting to a Wi-Fi network. It's better to set your own complex password. It must be at least 8 characters long.
After making the necessary changes, press the "Apply" button:
To improve the speed and stability of your Wi-Fi connection, it is recommended to use the "Channel Optimization" feature:
If the router is connected to an OpenVPN server, as shown in the previous instructions (using the IL1 server in Israel), you can connect to your configured Wi-Fi network and check everything in action.
In this case, the Wi-Fi network is called "WIFINETWORK," and the password for connection is "SuperMegaPass."
To demonstrate the operation of a VPN over Wi-Fi, an iPhone 12 will be used.

Done! Wi-Fi distribution over VPN connection is complete!
In the same way, you can connect any other device that you want to hide behind a VPN to the Wi-Fi network you have configured.
If you want to disable your Wi-Fi network with a VPN connection, switch it from "ON" to "OFF".
